Therapy for Trauma in Wisconsin

Are you reliving trauma and the same patterns over and over again?

The images keep playing in your mind. You're not sure if you’ll ever be able to move past the trauma that this event has caused you. Trauma can take over your life. It can consume you. You may be an over-thinker or spend time ruminating. You may feel unmotivated and unsure of what direction you’re heading in life. You may feel overwhelmed mentally and emotionally. You may struggle to set boundaries and fall into using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with what life has thrown at you. You’re easily triggered and people just don’t get it.

What is Trauma?

Trauma has you saying, “I get triggered so easily”, “the images keep replaying in my mind”, or “I feel so disconnected from myself”. Every one’s experience and reaction to trauma is different. In short, trauma is an experience of distressing or stressful events that feels outside of our control or difficult to cope with. We may struggle to deal with the big emotions that come from such a traumatic event. And that’s totally normal. Experiencing trauma shouldn’t be normal. Trauma can be experienced from a young age, through adulthood, and into old age. It could be an experience in the work place, bullying, sexual assault, poverty, discrimination, war, or violence in the community. Trauma can cause lasting adverse effects on mental, physical, emotional and/or spiritual well-being. If symptoms persist for long periods of time, PTSD may develop (see here for more information from Mayo Clinic).

Symptoms of Trauma

Trauma can show up in our body and mind in a variety of ways. Here are some common symptoms after experiencing a traumatic event:

  • Exhaustion

  • Flashbacks

  • Avoidance of emotions or activities related to trauma

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Anxiety / Depression

  • Numbness

  • Dissociation

  • Nightmares

  • Feeling out of control

What is Childhood Trauma?

Trauma, particularly childhood trauma, can be deeply distressing or disturbing experiences that occur during early childhood. These experiences could be one time events or a series of events from a child directly experiencing the event or having unmet needs from a parent or caregiver who is affected by their own trauma. These experiences can create patterns of behavior and limiting beliefs that persist into adulthood. Individuals who have faced childhood trauma may feel overwhelmed emotionally and often struggle with feelings of being disconnected from themselves and others. This can often lead people into struggling to form healthy relationships and lead a fulfilling life.
